Lofoten Road Trip Guide

Lofoten Road Trip Guide

There are some places on earth that feel more like a dream than a destination. The Lofoten Islands in Northern Norway are just that raw, otherworldly, and quietly powerful. This dramatic archipelago leaves a lasting impression, and it's no surprise that many of the fine art travel prints now available on our site were inspired by its wild beauty.

Our Arctic road trip led us through Tromsø, Henningsvær, Nusfjord, Skagsanden Beach, Ramberg, Fredvang, Hamnøy, Sakrisøya, Reine, and finally Å, a village that truly feels like the end of the world.

Along the way, we passed icy fjords, moody coastlines, and traditional rorbuer cabins that feel suspended in time.

If you're planning your own Lofoten Islands itinerary, here’s something worth knowing: driving from Tromsø to Lofoten is a long haul. While it offers a few quiet, meditative stretches, the landscape between Tromsø and the start of the islands isn’t the most scenic. If you're short on time or simply prefer to skip the extra mileage, we highly recommend flying into Harstad/Narvik Airport (EVE) in Evenes, just 105 kilometers (65 miles) from the islands, or Bodø Airport, both excellent gateways to the region.

Once you arrive, the views become cinematic. Henningsvær, one of the most photogenic villages in Lofoten, is perched on tiny islets and known not only for its colorful harbor and artist studios but also the now-iconic Henningsvær Stadium, a small football pitch surrounded by ocean and mountains, often described as the most scenic stadium in the world.

Skagsanden Beach offers black volcanic sands and Arctic light, while Ramberg and Fredvang lead to wind-swept coastlines and soaring peaks. The classic fishing villages of Hamnøy, Sakrisøya, Reine, and Å look like they've leapt straight from a travel magazine, and they’re just as serene and breathtaking in person.

If you're looking for a unique place to stay in Lofoten, our top recommendation is Hattvika Lodge in Ballstad

Nestled in a historic fishing harbor, Hattvika blends traditional charm with modern luxury. The property features 19th-century fisherman’s cabins restored with Scandinavian interiors, heated floors, and panoramic views of the fjord. Whether you're booking a hillside loft or a sea-level rorbu, it’s the kind of place that turns a trip into a true experience.

Whether you're a traveller chasing northern lights and Arctic photography, a collector searching for art inspired by Norway, or someone planning the ultimate Lofoten road trip, this corner of the world delivers magic at every turn.
